 Using the Beta Filtering Tools

We’re excited about two new additions to our search tools: filtering that allows you to sort search results by one or more popular genres, and/or by “hit” status. We’re describing these tools as “beta” because the database has not yet been fully tagged. This means that the filtered results will reflect only a portion of what’s available. We are continually tagging more data to improve filter search results.

Using the filter tool is a two-step process. First click the circle beside either “all 31 genres” or “select one or more popular genres.” By choosing “select one or more popular genres,” you will activate the squares next to the five popular genres currently available as filter options. You may choose as many of these as you like. After you have checked your choices, click the box on the far right that says "filter."

You may also choose to see only songs that were hits, based on various measures of popularity. You may filter either the full category results for hits, or the results for your choices of genres. You may also search hits by one or more genres.
When you browse to a new category, full results will automatically be displayed. You may then make your filtering choices.

To get the most comprehensive search results, please continue to use “select all genres” while we complete our tagging work to offer comprehensive filtering results.

Using the Index Search drop-down box

1. How do I use the Index Search drop-down box?

Type the first THREE OR FOUR letters of the topic you’re looking for into the Index Search drop-down box. (And sorry -- the drop-down box doesn't think as quickly as you type. Wait about two seconds for the list to appear.) This will engage the drop-down list, which will show you an index of subjects beginning with those three letters.

For example, if you're searching for songs about "charity", type in the letters CHAR. Here's what you'll seee when the drop-down list is engaged:

Use your cursor to highlight the term that is closest to what you’re looking for. Click on it, and it will appear in the box. Then click Go, and you’ll be taken to a list of songs about that topic.

2. I typed a word into the Index Search drop-down box, but it didn’t produce any results. How can I find the topic I’m looking for?

We’re adding search terms to our index every day, but the term you’ve requested hasn’t been included yet. We may have songs about this subject classified in a different way. Here’s how to continue your search:

  • Try a different search term.
  • If you don't see any drop-down list at all, try typing just the first THREE OR FOUR letters of the topic your looking for into the Index Search drop-down box, instead of the whole word. This will give the list time to engage, so that you can view your choices.
  • Try again, using a more general word or phrase. For example, if you’re looking for songs about dalmations, try typing in the more general term “dogs”.
  • Try a different search method. You can also use one of the two other search methods: the A-Z listings, which list all the major categories alphabetically; or the Super-Categories, which will help you move from a general idea to more specific categories. (Click on the “Main Search Page” link in the upper corner of the search page to view the Super-Category selections.

If you still can’t find what you’re looking for, email us and we’ll try to help.

3. I typed a word into the Index Search drop-down box and hit return, but nothing happened.

Hitting return before the drop-down list appears can lead to a "no results" finding. Also, make sure you click "Go". Type the first THREE OR FOUR letters of the topic you’re looking for into the Index Search drop-down box; this allows the drop-down index list to appear. If we have songs classified by the word you’ve typed in, you’ll see at least one choice appear just below the box. Use your cursor to highlight the term that is closest to what you’re looking for. Click on it, and it will appear in the box. Then click Go, and you’ll be taken to a list of songs about that topic.

4. I typed a few letters into the Index Search drop-down box, and several choices appeared below. They seem very similar. How do I know which one to choose?

Some words have several meanings, so we’ve tried to suggest different categories that might interest you. For example, if you type the word “charity” into the Index Search drop-down box, you’ll see the following choices, each of which is related to the idea of charity:

Charity [CHARACTER & INTEGRITY]
Charity [GIVE]
Charity [HELP]
Charity [MONEY]
Charity [POVERTY]

The words in brackets are main categories. Use your cursor to highlight the term that is closest to the meaning of “charity” that you’re looking for. Click on it, and it will appear in the Index Search drop-down box. Then click Go, and you’ll be taken to a list of songs about that topic.

Once you’ve seen those results, you may want to look at the other meanings. You can re-type the word “charity” into the Index Search drop-down box and navigate to one of the other categories.
